The family is guided, coached & taught how to interact with the child through all their working hours. Counselling of parents at regular intervals is an important part of the Centre’s work in order to guide them on all aspects of the child’s overall development.

Education for the children is free. However AVT is charged for at a highly subsidised rate of `500 a month. There are a number of children who find it difficult to pay this amount too.

The strategies used in teaching to learn to listen language relies heavily on emulating real life in the class room. Also toys and books play a crucial role in engaging a young child and helping it develop skills like motor control, reading, in addition to developing cognition. Hence toys and books are important to our program.

Cochlear implants are prohibitively expensive, quite beyond the reach of even mid-income families. However their benefits offset this expense. They prove to be a boon for the hearing impaired child and help it to learn to listen, aquire language and learn to speak.

This intervention greatly influences the habilitation of the hearing impaired child in the normally listening world , giving them opportunities for success in most aspects of life.

The total cost of surgery and the device along with associated diagnostics costs upwards of `6 lakhs.

Surgery costs are between `1,00,000 to `1,50,000. MRIs, CT scans & other blood tests are required before a surgery for Cochlear Implants is carried out.

Our children wear cochlear implants in one ear. In the non implanted ear they must wear a suitable hearing aid. Both these devices need to be regularly checked on as well as maintained. Mapping of the implant is carried out every three months by default.

Audiograms are then conduted to test the efficiancy of the implant and the hearing aid.
However the tests are carried out as and when indicated by necessity.

Our program relies heavily on listening. It therefore follows that the childs listening aids are functioning at their best. Our device aid program helps children to buy or repair their hearing aids.

It also helps families by partially funding the cost of cochlear implant surgeries and repairs.

Hearing aids maintainance like batteries or repair can also be expensive for the parents. But these hearing aids provide great benefit for the children.

If so ear marked donations received towards our corpus help us towards our running costs. Increasing our corpus is crucial as interest rates are falling.

Other than routine running expenses EAR spends nearly Rs.15000 a month towards music classes, Rs.20000 a month towards dance classes and Rs.18000 per month towards giving children a better nutrition.

Occupational and speech therapy costs another 20000 per month for the needy children.

The school calendar is dotted with a variety of events.

With celebrations such as dahi handi and birth of Christ, fun activities like making origami articles or painting diyas, participating in school and inter school competitions , visits to the NCPA or the CSMVS , excursions to parks and zoos , educational visits to the local mall or the railway station….all designed by our teachers to help our young charges develop listening language and speaking with complete participation of the families of our children form an integral part of our program.
